How: Through the beef checkoff, a producer funded, controlled and coordinated effort that begins with the state and impacts national and international markets. The Mississippi Beef council collects "checkoff" dollars. Under the law one dollar is collected on each head of cattle and calves sold. Fifty cents automatically goes to the Beef Board and 50 cents is retained by the Mississippi Beef Council to spend on programs. What: Checkoff programs build demand for beef and veal in both domestic and foreign markets. These program areas consist of the following: RESEARCH This provides the foundation for checkoff-funded activity. All information and promotion projects are based on consumer marketing, nutrition and product development research. Some research programs going on in Mississippi include the utilization of ultrasound technology to measure and assess carcass merit of live animals. The Meat Case Simplification program will help to revolutionize how consumers shop for beef in grocery stores, and also, new product development, such as the "beef in minutes" selection that includes a warmable roast beef. PROMOTION The promotion activities of the Mississippi Beef Council encompass radio and print advertising, merchandising and point-of-purchase programs that enhance the appeal of beef to consumers and help retailers and foodservice operators market beef more effectively. CONSUMER INFORMATION This program area creates a positive image for beef by repeating and reinforcing the beef industry's messages through the news media, food editors, teachers, dieticians, physicians and other thought-leader audiences. INDUSTRY INFORMATION Industry Information programs create a positive marketing climate for the cattle industry by helping to manage misleading publicity concerning food safety, environmental and welfare issues.
